Welcome back March Makers!

New and familiar faces have been steadily finding their way to the Makerspace. We started the first week back with a giveaway of mindfulness bags including supplies to make a glitter jar. Second year student Joy Tolledo kindly sent a photo of their finished jar and commented on how it helped when studying for midterms.

Welcome back students

On March 8, the campus held a Welcome Event for students. Over 100 students dropped by the Makerspace Table to make and take buttons, and chat about opportunities to create in the space. Our most popular button was “Scarby”, the Library’s unofficial mascot.

Free 3D Printing

Makerspace users who have access to the 3D printers will now get 3 free recreational 3D prints. For information on how to become a Makerspace user and gain access to the 3D printers, visit our website.

Faculty Blog

Playing with Prototypes

Makerspace staff joined the MGSC35 "Innovation" class to demonstrate and discuss various methods for prototyping. Prototypes are an important step of the design process. Prototyping enables creators to quickly visualize and validate their ideas as well as continually improve their design. Featured Resource

In partnership with the Department of Physical and Environmental Sciences (DPES) we have acquired a hand-held 3D scanner for users in our Makerspace. The portable Creaform ACADEMIA is a professional grade 3D scanner that will be useful in many disciplines. If you want to be the first to use the scanner, contact the Makerspace to be a part of our pilot roll-out. makerspace.utsc@utoronto.ca

Introduction to 3D Printing

March 29, 2022 12-1pm
This is an introduction to the tools and techniques for 3D printing. At the end of the workshop, you will have general knowledge of the principles, tools and best practices for 3D printing. Note: Attendance is mandatory if you are interested in accessing the 3D printers at the Makerspace.

Introduction to 3D Design

April 8, 2022 12-1pm
This session introduces you to 3D design using Tinkercad, a free design platform that is great for beginners. At the end of the workshop, you will have created a basic object that is ready to be 3D printed.

April 12, 2022 12-1pm

Introduction to Stop Motion

April 26 12-1pm
Learn the basics for creating a Stop Motion video using Stop Motion Studio app and a mobile phone or tablet. At the end of the workshop, you will have knowledge of the tools, software and steps needed to make a basic Stop Motion video. The best way to participate in the session is to download the app on your phone or tablet, and follow the presentation on another device.

What Are You Making?

Show us what you’ve been making! Throughout the semester we would love to know what you are making for class or just for fun. Submit a photo and a short description of your creation (e.g. what you did, what equipment you used, etc.) If your resource is selected to be highlighted you will receive a Tim Horton’s gift card.

Email us and include a photo and short description of your creation and we'll feature it in our next newsletter as well as highlight it on our web site.
