Issue 18, September 2022

Welcome to Fall term 2022. For those returning to campus, welcome back! If you haven’t been on campus for a while, the library is undergoing extensive renovations, which means the Makerspace has relocated to room AC 256. For those discovering the Makerspace for the first time, we hope you discover all that the space has to offer. We have many upcoming workshops in both online and in-person modes. This will be the first time we offer in-person workshops in over 2 years. Share your opinion with us about your preferred learning mode (in-person or online). 100 Strong in the Makerspace

In July, the Makerspace team participated in the 100 Strong program leading an introduction to 3D design and 3D printing. The 100 Strong Program supports young Black boys between 11-14 who visited the UTSC campus for three weeks engaging them with activities and experiences on a university campus. The young people were engaged in making key chains through Tinkercad.

Small Gestures of Support

The Makerspace has been utilizing its Cricut machine and 3D printers to create stickers and 3D printed key chains to welcome everyone back to campus. These items have been distributed through the various orientations events. As many are maybe feeling a little overwhelmed or anxious a small token of welcome can go along way. These items can break the ice and provide encouragement. Connect with the Makerspace for stickers, buttons and 3D printed objects for events and classes.

Showcase

Today we feature UTSC staff member Nisha Panchal and her audio-recording projects. Nisha currently works as the Interim IDS Coop Program Manager and has been a frequent Makerspace user borrowing the microphone kit. She uses the microphone to record spots as a volunteer voiceover artist for 106.5 ELMNT FM, First Nations Radio as well as promoting the Asinabka Film Festival. Nisha returned to her “first love of acting” through voice acting during the pandemic and is grateful to have access to the microphone. She explains that it “allows me to participate in something I might not otherwise be able to.
