We are a few days away from the end of another winter season. Celebrate spring in the Makerspace by exploring equipment that is available to use in the space and beyond. As highlighted below, our sewing machine now has wheels and can be used outside of the Makerspace. Also, enjoy the vibrant colours of our recently replenished vinyl for use on our Cricut Maker.

Stop Motion Short Film Winner

Congratulations to Nikolas Radulovich! His stop motion short LEGO JEWEL HEIST won top prize at our 3rd annual Stop Motion Film Festival. An honourable mention to Umar Rahman, who submitted his short film The Average Night in Gotham.

Sewing at the Repair Workshop

During UTSC’s Sustainability Week, the Makerspace’s sewing machine was featured to demonstrate simple repairs that can be made to clothing to keep them in use longer and avoid landfills.

Sewing machine three-day loan period

The Singer sewing machine is now available to borrow for three days! The machine comes in a nifty traveling case for easy transportation. Included is a number of different sewing feet, thread, and other parts. If you are not a Makerspace user yet, visit our Get Started page to find out how to become one today.

Beginner Amigurumi
Did you know that crocheting is a proven stress buster? Amigurumi is the Japanese art of crocheting small, stuffed yarn creatures. We are holding a stress buster session on Friday, March 31 from 2 - 4 p.m. in the library to crochet a penguin. Supplies and instruction provided. Email makerspace.utsc@utoronto.ca to reserve your spot. All are welcome.

Introduction to 3D Design (in-person)

March 21, 2023 | 1:10 - 2 p.m., The BRIDGE Lab in the IC Building
This session introduces you to 3D design using Tinkercad, a free design platform that is great for beginners. At the end of the workshop, you will have created a basic object that is ready to be 3D printed.

Microcontrollers: Beyond Basics (in-person)

March 28, 2023 | 3:10 - 4 p.m., AC254 in the library
This hands-on session will move beyond creating basic circuits. We will work with various sensors and other signal types. It is recommended that you attend the “Introduction to Microcontrollers” workshop beforehand or have a basic understanding of circuits and microcontrollers. Also, bring your own laptop if possible. We will be coding using Arduino IDE free software.

Introduction to Stop Motion (online)

March 29, 2023 | 1:10 - 2 p.m.
Learn the basics for creating a Stop Motion video using Stop Motion Studio app and a mobile phone or tablet. At the end of the workshop, you will have knowledge of the tools, software and steps needed to make a basic Stop Motion video. The best way to participate in the session is to download the app on your phone or tablet, and follow the presentation on another device.

Introduction to Microcontrollers (in-person)

April 4, 2023 | 3:10 - 4 p.m., AC254 in the library
This hands-on session will introduce you to the basics of Arduino. At the end of the workshop, you will have a general understanding of circuitry and how to create a simple circuit using Arduino. Bring your own laptop if possible. We will be coding using Arduino IDE free software.

Podcasting: The Basics (online)

April 5, 2023 | 1:10 - 2 p.m.
This introductory workshop will introduce you to the tools and resources related to podcasts. You will learn about best practices for creating a podcast, including choosing a format, comparing recording software and selecting the proper equipment needed to complete your digital project.

What Are You Making?

Show us what you’ve been making! Throughout the semester we would love to know what you are making for class or just for fun. Submit a photo and a short description of your creation (e.g. what you did, what equipment you used, etc.). If your resource is selected to be highlighted, you will receive a Tim Horton’s gift card.

Email us and include a photo and short description of your creation and we'll feature it in our next newsletter as well as highlight it on our website.
