Happy Fall! Once you've settled in to your new classes it's time to book an appointment at the Makerspace and take advantage of our new hours! We are now open Monday - Friday from 11 am until 6 pm.

Scarby the Hedgehog Returns

We're celebrating the new semester with the UTSC Library's unofficial mascot: Scarby the Hedgehog. Drop by the Makerspace or keep an eye out for us tabling this fall to snag your very own 3D printed Scarby the Hedgehog keychain. Customizable buttons will also be available at various events around campus courtesy of the makerspace, so come over and say hi if you see us out and about!

Record your own podcast!

The UTSC Library Makerspace now has podcast equipment and space available to record your own audio production. The One Button and Podcasting Studio is located in AC286, in the newly renovated space just to the left of the library entrance. The space features an audio mixer, microphones and headphones to help you create your own podcast, voice-over project or even …

New Equipment Alert!

The Makerspace now has a handheld vocal microphone and a microphone stand available for three day loans. Check them out on our equipment page. An event-friendly microphone and stand was requested by makerspace users. If you have any equipment requests contact us, or chat to us in-person the next time you are in the space. Showcase

Cosplay Corner

FanExpo preparations were in full swing in the Makerspace this summer. Cosplayers Blaire and Tara were busy making their costumes using our sewing machine and 3D printing props while taking advantage of our newly renovated space which has far more room for bigger projects. Congrats to all our cosplays for getting their costumes completed in time!

Makerspace Stressbusters: Origami (in-person)

September 26, 2023 | 2:30 - 3 pm, UTSC LIbrary - Makerspace - AC256
The stress-free workshop will introduce you to the art of paper folding. We'll start by making jumping frogs and go from there! All materials provided.

Introduction to Podcasting (online)

September 28, 2023 | 2:10 - 3 pm, online
This online session will introduce you to the tools and resources related to podcasts. You will learn about best practices for creating a podcast, including choosing a format, comparing recording software and selecting the proper equipment needed to complete your digital project.

Introduction to 3D Design (in-person)

October 4, 2023 | 2:10 - 3 pm, UTSC Library - Makerspace - AC256
This hands-on session introduces you to 3D design using Tinkercad, a free design platform that is great for beginners. At the end of the workshop, you will have created a basic object that is ready to be 3D printed.

Makerspace Stressbusters: Button Making (in-person)

October 17, 2023 | 2:30 - 3 pm, UTSC Library - Makerspace - AC256
The stress-free workshop will give you a chance to design and create your own buttons using the Makerspace's two-inch button maker. Come with a pre-printed design or bring your own creativity to make your button masterpiece using the provided supplies.

Introduction to Microcontrollers (in-person)

October 18, 2023 | 2:10 - 3 pm, UTSC Library - Makerspace AC256
This hands-on session will introduce you to the basics of microcontrollers. At the end of the workshop, you will have a general understanding of circuitry and how to create a simple circuit. We have a limited number of kits so you may be working with a partner.

Introduction to Stop Motion (online)

October 19, 2023 | 2:10 - 3 pm, online
Learn the basics for creating a Stop Motion video using the Stop Motion Studio app and a mobile phone or tablet. At the end of the workshop, you will have knowledge of the tools, software and steps needed to make a basic Stop Motion video. The best way to participate in the session is to download the app on your phone or tablet and follow the presentation on another device.

Microcontrollers: Beyond Basics (in-person)

October 25, 2023 | 2:10 - 3 pm, UTSC Library - Makerspace AC256
This hands-on session will move beyond creating basic circuits. We will work with various sensors and other signal types. It is recommended that you attend the “Introduction to Microcontrollers” workshop beforehand or have a basic understanding of circuits and microcontrollers. We have a limited number of kits so you may be working with a partner.

What Are You Making?

Show us what you’ve been making! Throughout the semester we would love to know what you are making for class or just for fun. Submit a photo and a short description of your creation (e.g. what you did, what equipment you used, etc.).

Email us and include a photo and short description of your creation and we'll feature it in our next newsletter as well as highlight it on our website.
