Upcoming Events: Inspiration for Your Side Gig



Have you ever thought about selling what you make? Not sure how to start or wondering how to take your small creator business to the next level? The UTSC Makerspace, AA&CC and The Hub are hosting a new program to help you get started!

Session 1: Drop by the UTSC Makerspace for questions and conversations with UTSC makers and entrepreneurs who sell their creations.

When: February 27, 11 am to 1 pm (Drop-in)
Where: UTSC Makerspace, AC256

Participants will receive a coupon for one free sheet of print-then-cut stickers or ten free buttons to help promote their small business. Lunch will be provided.

Session 2: Learn more about pricing and your product with the Hub.

When: March 12, 12 - 1 pm
Where: The HUB, HL280

Lunch will be provided. Participants will need to bring their own laptop or tablet.

New Podcast Equipment Timeslots

Due to demand, the podcast space will no longer be available to book for the entire day. There are now two bookings available for the equipment:
  • 9 am – 2 pm
  • 3 pm – 8 pm
Should you need more time, book 3 pm – 8 pm and you can stay until 15 minutes before the library closes.

If you have an upcoming booking, you still have the space booked for the entire day. Any future bookings will adhere to the new booking schedule.

Creature Feature

The Makerspace staff have been putting the Cricut Maker 3 through its paces making these 3D animals from cardstock. New Cricut creations join our displays every week, so swing by to see what we've been up to or book the Cricut Maker 3 and make your own.

Makerspace Stressbusters: Greeting Cards (in-person)

February 13, 2024 | 2:30 - 3 pm, UTSC Library - Makerspace AC256
This stress-free workshop will have you creating a custom greeting card using templates and stickers cut out by our Cricut Maker 3. All materials provided.

Microcontrollers: The Basics (in-person)

February 14, 2024 | 2:10 - 3 pm, UTSC Library - Makerspace AC256
This hands-on session will introduce you to the basics of microcontrollers. At the end of the workshop, you will have a general understanding of circuitry and how to create a simple circuit. We have a limited number of kits so you may be working with a partner.

Podcasts: The Basics (online)

February 22, 2024 | 2:10 - 3 pm, Online
This introductory workshop will introduce you to the tools and resources related to podcasts. You will learn about best practices for creating a podcast, including choosing a format, comparing recording software and selecting the proper equipment needed to complete your audio project.

Makerspace Stressbusters: Booking Binding (in-person)

This stress-free workshop will introduce you to a simple book binding technique. All materials provided.

Podcasts: Beyond the Basics (online)

February 28, 2024 | 2:10 - 3 pm, Online
During this session, we'll go beyond the fundamentals of podcast creation. You'll gain insights into mastering, podcast directories, and RSS feeds. Additionally, there will be a practical exercise involving the editing of an audio file using Audacity. To actively participate in this hands-on activity, make sure to download the free program beforehand.

Microcontrollers: Beyond the Basics (in-person)

February 29, 2024 | 2:10 - 3 pm, UTSC Library - Makerspace AC256
This hands-on session will move beyond creating basic circuits. We will work with various sensors and other signal types. It is recommended that you attend the “Introduction to Microcontrollers” workshop beforehand or have a basic understanding of circuits and microcontrollers. We have a limited number of kits so you may be working with a partner.

Introduction to 3D Design (in-person)

March 6, 2024 | 2:10 - 3 pm, UTSC Library - Makerspace AC256
This hands-on session introduces you to 3D design using Tinkercad, a free design platform that is ideal for beginners. At the end of the workshop, you will have created a basic object that is ready to be 3D printed. You are welcomed to use your own laptop.

What Are You Making?

Show us what you’ve been making! Throughout the semester we would love to know what you are making for class or just for fun. Submit a photo and a short description of your creation (e.g. what you did, what equipment you used, etc.).

Email us and include a photo and short description of your creation and we'll feature it in our next newsletter as well as highlight it on our website.
