Two years ago this January, I was introduced to the Innovation Hub at the University of Toronto. Although this unit is housed at the St. George campus, I was welcomed at their 10-week, Design Thinking Experience Program. This program which invited both staff, students and faculty members provided a wonderful “deep-dive” into the design thinking process. Over the term, groups were assigned real life “campus pain points” to apply design thinking principles. After two years, I am still thinking about this program’s impact and recommend the program to anyone who is interested. Design thinking is another tool in the toolbox to help facilitate creative and critical thinking as it provides a flexible structure for brainstorming, evaluating and implementing possible solutions. For those who can’t commit to a 10-week program, Innovation Hub also put out a regular blog with useful ideas and resources.
